ARKANSAS DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CURRENT PHASE:
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
ARE COVID-19 VACCINES SAFE?
Vaccines have played an important role in protecting the health and safety of communities and nations throughout history. Learn how the federal government is ensuring the safety of COVID-19 vaccines.
HOW MANY SHOTS OF COVID-19 VACCINE ARE REQUIRED?
Both Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech require two vaccines for maximum effectiveness.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR IMMUNITY TO BUILD AFTER VACCINATION?
After receiving the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, it usually takes about two weeks for the body to develop sufficient antibodies for maximum protection against the virus. Most patients build ~50% immunity approximately two weeks after the first dose.
WHAT SIDE EFFECTS CAN I EXPECT UPON VACCINATION?
Although this list is as comprehensive as possible, it is in no way a definitive repository for all side effects associated with the vaccine. Talk to your pharmacist or physician for more information.
- Injection site redness/soreness (most common)
- Fever (often after 2nd dose)
- Chills/Hot spells
- Body aches
- Headache
- Malaise/Lethargy
WHAT IS THE WAITING PERIOD BETWEEN DOSES?
If you received the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, you must wait a minimum of 21 days between the first and second dose of the vaccine. Likewise, if you received the Moderna vaccine, you must wait a minimum of 28 days between the first and second dose of vaccine. If you are unable to schedule at these exact times, the CDC allows for second doses to be given up to 42 days after the first dose with minimal loss of effectiveness. Any time outside this window has not been studied yet, and is therefore not recommended. Please do not attempt to schedule a second dose early, as it may result in loss of appointment and rescheduling for the proper time. This will be checked upon arrival for your appointment.
I SIGNED UP FOR A SPOT ON YOUR WAIT LIST. DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT THROUGH THIS PORTAL?
At this time, we are requesting that you do not schedule a vaccine unless you are in the current stage of vaccination that has been published by the Arkansas State Department of Health. If vaccine is going to be wasted at the end of our appointments, we will contact you in order of urgency and place on our wait list. If you schedule an appointment and do not meet the requirements, you will not receive the vaccine regardless of appointment reservation. If you are unsure of the requirements for vaccination, use this link to the Arkansas State Department of Health.
